Europa Summer Festivals : Arena di Verona ( 87 th Edition)

Every European Summertime, Opera’s Lovers follow one of the most important Opera Shows, arround the World.
A Roman amphitheatre in Verona, perfectly preserved and built circa AD 30, to stage the “LUDII” ( shows and games ),
it is now a wonderfull open air scenario to make the mise en scene of the greateast operas.

A major earthquake in 1117 almost destroyed the building, but during the Renaissance started the first interventions to recover the arena’s function as a theatre.

In 1913, operatic performances in the area commenced earnest due to the zeal and initiative of Giovanni Zenatello and Ottone Rovato.
And on August 10. to celebrate Giuseppe Verdi 100 Birthday, the arena started again staging Verdi’s Masterpiece : AIDA.
Since then, summer seasons of opera have been staged on the Arena.

Every year over 500,000 people see spectacular productions.
The arena has featured many of world's most prominent opera singers as Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi and Renata Tebaldi , among other celebrated names.

The French Conductor, Stephane Lissner, is since 2005 Il Sovrintendente della Arena and its Artistic Director.
